When you understand who you are, what you value, your strengths, and your areas for development you have the pivotal building blocks to construct  your self-confidence. This article explores the concept of self-awareness, and its relationship with self-confidence. You will be aware that when your self-esteem is high you are more likely to take responsibility, and when you take responsibility you  become even more aware of your personal power and achievements.  Hence, you focus on accomplishing what is right for the business or the organisation in which you are operating, So, by accomplishing things you gain even higher self-esteem. It is a vicious cycle.

Your self-esteem and self-awareness are interconnected concepts that play a crucial role in your overall mental health and well-being. Understanding how these two elements influence one another can lead you to outstanding personal growth and improvement in various aspects of your life.

Understanding Self-Esteem

Your self-esteem is essentially the perception you have of yourself, encompassing thoughts and feelings of worthiness, value, and self-respect. It reflects how you view your abilities and potential, and how your abilities and potential influence your decisions and interactions. Self-esteem exists on a spectrum, ranging from low to high, and can fluctuate based on experiences, feedback, your personal beliefs and your spiritual understanding of the laws of the universe.

  • High Self-Esteem: When your self-esteem is high you tend to have a positive view of yourself. You are more likely to take opportunities, pursue goals, and engage in social situations confidently. High self-esteem enables your resilience to be heightened in the face of adversity and to claim your credit where credit is due.
  • Low Self-Esteem: Conversely, when your self-esteem is low you struggle with self-doubt, anxiety, and a negative self-image. This may lead to withdrawal from social situations, reluctance to pursue opportunities, and increased susceptibility to external criticisms.

The relationship between self-awareness and self-esteem is a dynamic one, where each can significantly influence the other:

  1. Self-Awareness Enhances Self-Esteem:
    • Understanding of your strengths and areas for development: A high degree of self-awareness enables you to recognise your strengths and areas for development accurately. When you acknowledge your unique talents and capabilities, it can positively impact your self-esteem. Understanding your limitations is equally important, as it can lead to self-improvement rather than negative self-judgment.
    • Authenticity and Self-Acceptance: Self-awareness promotes authenticity, allowing you to embrace your true self without the need for external validation. This acceptance fosters higher self-esteem, as you feel more comfortable in your own skin. I paraphrase Genos International by sayi9ng authenticity is about openly and effectively expressing yourself, honouring your commitments and encouraging authentic behaviours in others. Authenticity involves openly expressing specific feelings at work, such as happiness, and frustration as well as giving feedback to colleagues about the way you feel and sharing emotions at the right time, to the right degree and to the right people.
  1. Self-Esteem Influences Self-Awareness:
    • Motivation for Reflection: When your self-esteem is high you are generally more open to self-reflection and honest assessment of yourself. This willingness encourages deeper self-awareness and a proactive approach to your personal growth.
    • Fear of Evaluation: Conversely, when your self-esteem is low you may avoid self-reflection either due to fear of discovering feelings you may not yet be ready to address or denial of your areas for development. This lack of self-awareness can perpetuate low self-esteem, thus creating a cycle that is difficult to break.

The Connection Between Self-Awareness and Self-Confidence

Don’t be defined by other people’s expectations. Define your own strengths – Susie Chan.

Your self-confidence is a vital component of your personal growth and success, serving as the foundation upon which you can pursue your goals and navigate challenges in your life. Your self-confidence  empowers you to take opportunities, learn from failures, and embrace opportunities with optimism and resilience. By cultivating self-awareness, nurturing a positive self-image, and fostering supportive environments, you can enhance your self-confidence and unlock your full potential. Ultimately, self-confidence not only enhances your individual life but also positively impacts the relationships you build and the contributions you make to the wider world.

During a point in my early career, I shared my aspiration with my director of midwifery service that I had intentions to be trained as a health visitor. She confidently said to me: black girls don’t become health visitors. My self-confidence enabled me to ignore her statement and to listen to my inner knowing. I have learnt not to let others define me. I define myself; my value does not decrease because of the inability of others to see my worth. I drew on the wisdom of Thomas Edison who said: If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.
